Filipino-American Heritage & History Month
The month of October is Filipino-American Heritage and History Month here in the states, and as a celebration of it, every day this month Pinoy-Culture will post information on Filipino-American history and events as well as info on our cultures and history. It is also Indigenous People Month in the Philippines as well so you will also see info on the indigenous groups in the Philippines. So come join and celebrate the month of October, which is a month in celebration of our Filipino heritage and history.
Day One:Filipino’s were the first Asians to arrive in the U.S.
On October 18, 1587, a group of Luzones Indios became the first Asians in the written history of what is now called the United States of America to have set foot on its soil. Captain Pedro de Unamuno landed in California and with him were Luzones Indios who were among the crew and landing party of the Spanish galleon, Nuestra Señora de Buena Esperanza.  Many believe the location to be Morro Bay. Others, however, question the exact location of their landing. Although the precise location is still being debated by historians, what is unquestioned is the fact that these Luzones Indios were part of the crew that sailed the western part of these vast continents.
On November 6, 1595, Filipino sailors were also aboard the San Agustin, commanded by Sebastian Rodriguez Cermeno, when it shipwrecked near Point Reyes by the mouth of San Francisco Bay in California. In 1763, the country has learned of the Manila Men and their 50 year old village at Saint-Malo in one of the bayous of Paroisse Plaquemine (the Civil Parish of Plaquemine), on the outskirts of New Orleans. Lafcadio Hearn wrote about these Manila Men on the national magazine Harper’s Weekly on March 31, 1883. On August 10, 1779, Fray Junipero Serra of the California Mission in Monterey confirmed Vicente Tallado, indio de la Panpangua en Philipinas, marinero.

Archaeologists have unearthed remnants of what they believe is a 1,000-year-old village on a jungle-covered mountaintop in the Philippines with limestone coffins of a type never before found in this Southeast Asian nation, officials said Thursday….
The discovery of the rectangular tombs, which were carved into limestone outcrops jutting from the forest ground, is important because it is the first indication that Filipinos at that time practiced a more advanced burial ritual than previously thought and that they used metal tools to carve the coffins.
 - Philippine Tomb Discovery At 1,000-Year-Old Village Show Unexpected Advances

This is some heady archaeological stuff. I mean, just absolutely amazing. I hope this gets a lot of play in our media, this needs to be prominently touted.
Discoveries like this basically rewrite what we understand about our archipelagic history. They are important in uncovering who we are and where we came from. The fact that there were hitherto unknown techniques in use is astonishing. Looking forward to the published study of the find.
The exciting part is, there is much more to be find throughout the country. We are an archaeological treasure trove, we just need the institutional support to explore.
The sad part of the story is the mention that most of our discovered archaeological sites are being destroyed by grave robbers and looters. These sites form an integral part of our national patrimony, they belong to every Filipino and help deepen our understanding of our heritage.
And it’s just fucking cool.

Whoah! All the Philippine history learned through the years will have to be unlearned and updated. I agree, this will radically change our understanding of our past, particularly the pre-Spanish period.
This reminds me of a long discussion back then on what parts of the Philippines might have been before the Spanish expeditions came. Sadly though, I cannot seem to find those exchanges in my archives anymore.
Anyway, like what we agreed on, historical records from our neighboring countries might reinforce knowledge derived from digs like this. But, before the research comes the funding… I wonder if there are Congressmen or Senators willing to spend on Philippine history…

Decided to take some pictures. ♥

Cleaning Entire House + Random Boxes in the Attic Garage = Really vintage and cute things !

So I’ve been digging around in my upstairs attic again which I always do when I clean for some odd reason, and while up there I found these boxes deep, deep, in the corner. Being the curious cat I am I dragged them out and started looking inside them. In one of the boxes I found these adorable things ! ♥

It’s mostly perfume, but in reallyy cute and vintage bottles. I actually don’t know who these belong to. I asked my mom if it was hers she said no and I know my Tatay wouldn’t use something like these and its not my Tita’s. Until now no one is claiming them and it’s a mystery how it got there. But since no one is claiming them they are mine now. The one I really love is the owl and the large pink bottles. Soo cute! ♥

The boxes they came in are also equally lovely. I’m planning to stack them up somewhere in my room just because they are that adorable. I also found a small blue Chinese vase which you can see on the picture below.

Every time I go up there it’s like a treasure hunt, I always find new things that appear up there. It’s my house’s Narnia !

Just a photograph of one of my flowers from my backyard. ♥ It’s at the end of the growing season and now it’s time for the harvest season. My family has already harvested most of our early summer vegetables like the green string beans, ampalaya (bitter melon), a couple of our eggplants, and these leaves which I forget the name of at the moment. We still have a lot that’s still growing and will grow for the next few weeks before we harvest them all for the upcoming season. :)

Our flowers have already started to wither and die, some however like this beautiful butterfly bush is still thriving. I’m going to harvest and dry some of the flowers growing as well as some herbs such as our tremendous amount of mint & basil.

☆╮New Stuff & Hair Dye ~

So I got some new stuff over the past several days ! Yayy ! ♥ None I bought by the way they were all given to me by my cousins and Tita. Haha. First one was the red and black plaid backpack that my Tita bought from Target. I was just looking around while Ate Rhea was getting all the stuff she needs and was looking at the bags and Tita is like “You like it? Alright I’m buying it.” I was like nooo that’s fine my nay will kill me. She’s like “Oh just hide it from her for now.” Haha. I love her.

The next one was the lace up boots from H&M when we went to the mall the last day my cousins and Tita, minus Ate Rhea, were leaving to go back to Florida. (Day of the earthquake) Ate Lilian then dragged me saying alright pick something you want I’m buying it. I’m like…seriously no that’s alright I already got the bag from your mom. She seriously wouldn’t let it go so I’m like alright and she suggested the boots which she saw me looking at when we first went in the store. So she bought those for me which I’m happy because I’ve been dying to get me some lace up boots wayy before they even started becoming a trend.

Then we have the Palty Hair Dye that Ate Rhea bought when we were at Beauty Credit in Flushing which she was looking for the bottle to dye her own hair and said she would buy mine’s to so we can both redye our roots.

I got the Sakura Creamy one and my gosh the Palty products smell good ! However they do start to fade after a few washes. But the color turned out good, not as the one in the box because I had darker hair not lighter to begin with but it’s still a good shade of brown. However you can’t see the real color until the sunlight hits it then you see it’s bright colors. Check the picture in my bubble tea post before this to see how it currently looks like compared to how it was before.

The color of my hair before. You can’t see the roots of my black hair in this picture because it’s flipped but I’ll put before and after pictures in another post as well as my review for Palty. ♥

☆╮Gotta love some bubble tea. :3

You have to love bubble tea. It’s just so addicting ! Me and Ate Rhea went to Barnes & Noble to look for a certain planner for her while I just read City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare which I still need to buy. We then went to that asian store across the street to grab some bubble tea. And seriously they charge wayy to much. -.- $3.25. I had to pay $6.50 for 2 small bubble’s and I’m like wdf? They didn’t even accept the student id discount. LAMEE.

Still it’s bubble tea. And the top covers are cutee ! ♥

♚ A d r e n i a [ uh-dre-nuh! ] ☆╮: Good luck ! We all love each other ! :D

So like I said my cousins from Florida came over to help Ate Rhea get settled into her new life as a New Yorker. I didn’t get to be with them much for most of the week during camping besides Ivan since he pretty much stayed with us while Ate Lilian and Ate Rhea did their own thing. It was after camping which was like 2 days I actually got to spend time with my pinsans before Ate Lilian and Ivan took the plane back to Florida.

I got a few stuff from my cousins and Tita that seriously they insisted I get. I’m like noo it’s ok don’t spend money on me but no I lost that battle. I’ll talk about that in one of my next posts.

Last night they were here we pretty much goofed off and got ourselves a Carvel ice cream cake after getting a GPS for Ate Rhea. At the Carvel the lady asked what do we want to write on it, and we were like uhh Good luck! We love you and then I forget who said it first but then it became Good luck! We love each other! Haha. The lady was giving us weird looks because we were laughing so hard for no reason before we left.

Then we ate dinner out in the porch. Eventually I brought out my camera and tripod and started taking a few pictures including two 10 pictures a sec. set in which we did funny faces and poses in each of those 20 pictures. c:

The next day we just went to QCM to shop at H&M before driving them to Laguardia for their 2:50 flight. During this time the earthquake happened and while everyone was going crazy and being scared we didn’t feel a thing and were pretty clueless. Haha.

When me and Rhea dropped them off and we finished our goodbyes and hugs, we just drove to Flushing to get some hairdye supplies. I almost found a few good stores. that has asian beauty products so expect me buying a lot of them and posting about it in the future. c:

Until we see each other again. Which is probably going to be more frequent now than before of only being with them 4x in my life haha. Thanksgiving !
